DIY Gift- Homemade Soap

Welcome to another DIY gift! This is a method for making your own soap right in your kitchen. Homemade soap is an excellent gift or addition to your own home.

Cold Process vs Melt and Pour

There are two major methods of making soap. The first and more traditional method is cold process. This method uses lye and requires a curing process.  It requires a bit more skill and is not ideal for children.

The second method is melt and pour. The name is self explanatory. You use a soap base and melt it then pour it into a mold. You can purchase soap base from craft stores in either white or clear. Alternately you can purchase ready made bars of soap and melt it down.

In this post I use already made soap bars as I was unable to get soap base and it worked fine.

WHAT YOU NEED 

Soap base (craft store soap base or readymade soap)

Scent-essential oils or soap scent

Add-ins- I used loose leaf tea. You can use soap add ins or other herbs, dried flowers etc.

WHAT TO DO 

Bring water to a boil in a saucepan 

Place shredded soap into a heat safe bowl  and place that on top of the boiling water.



Add water as needed to mixture until it becomes thick and smooth.





Add scent and any colouring desired.





Spray mold with cooking spray to make removal easier.

Pour soap into mold and add add-ins

Spray the top of the soap mixture with rubbing alcohol to get rid of the bubbles.

Place into refrigerator or a cool dry place and allow the soap to dry out. Note that the more water you add in the melting process the longer it will take to dry.


Remove soap carefully from mold.

Lightly score the soap to decide where to cut.

Once you have sliced the soap you can allow it to completely dry out 

Wrap and gift!

A Few Festieve Things

Hello, as with every season I like to round up some things I’m excited to use. Today I am sharing a few festive items.

Body cream- I have heard literally every other beauty blogger recommend this cream. I was sick of hearing about how great it was and how delicious it smells. I finally bought the bullet and got a travel size tub. I love it! This cream truly delivers moisture which is essential for when it is cooler and dryer. And yes, it does smell really good!

Body mist- A Thousand Wishes is a popular recurring holiday fragrance from BBW. It smells like sparkles and champagne and a shimmery gold lame dress! 

Candle I couldn’t talk about my favourite things without including a candle. This is a repeat purchase: Marshmallow Fireside from White Barn/BBW. This one has a woodsy yet sweet smell. 

Body wash- Snow Angel by Philosophy,  one of my favourite bath and body companies has a crisp slighlty warm sugary smell. I got this in a mini size because I only plan on using it during the festive season. Philosophy products always have a strong yet not overpowering scent and they give a good lather leaving your skin clean and moisturiser.

Eyeshadow palette- This palette, Prism by Anastasia Beverley Hills is their holiday edition. I love the glittery jewel and metallic tones but I am also super intrigued by the bright matter. ABH ‘s formula is generally very pigmented and smooth and this palette is no different. I think it’s awesome for the holiday season but definitely great year round.

Tea- Over the past year I have become very fond of tea. My preference is a fruit or even floral tea but this Chai spice tea is flavourful, spicy and very festive. It’s great warm with some milk but I actually like my tea (and coffe) cold and sans milk.

Champagne Gummy Bears

Hello everyone.  Hoping you had a beautiful Christmas/Holiday season and are as eager as I am to leave 2016 behind. It hasn’t been all bad but it was definitely messy. 

This is a recipe I tried a couple months ago but I thought would be a perfect NYE treat… Champagne Gummy bears. Of course, you can also use regular wine.

I first heard of these about two or three years ago. At that point they were only being sold by a very high end gourmet candy company and though beautiful and delicious looking, not easily attainable for me.

Then the pictures and tutorials began showing up on Pinterest and I knew…I had to try.

The recipe I used is a mash up of two I found online.  One is from Cooking with Janica and Sprinkle Bakes. I used less gelatin than both recipes called for and it gave me a softer gummy which I prefer. I also used the recommendation from Sprinkle Bakes of adding an additional flavour because just using the wine makes it a bit bland. So let us continue. ..

WHAT YOU NEED 

1) 1 cup Wine– champagne, prosecco, red, white, blush. I used a white, a red and a sparkling rose.

2) Gummy bear molds– I bought these on Amazon, each can make 50 bears and it comes in pairs.

3) 3 packets of gelatin (or if you want a vegan option, use agar-agar)

4) Food colouring– Depends on the flavour, I used pink for the rose, red for the red wine and a little yellow for the white wine.

5) 1/2 cup of white sugar

6) 2-3 drops of wine food flavouring – yes this exists but I couldn’t get any when I wanted it so I used strawberry, I think any berry flavour can work.

7) Squeeze bottle– for easy delivery of the gel.

Ingredients 

WHAT TO DO 

1) Mix 3 packets of gelatin with water and let it dissolve.

2) Add sugar and mix in.

3) In a saucepan /frying pan Pour in wine and allow to come to a boil. 

4) Add sugar/gelatin mix to warm wine and stir in to dissolve.

5) Add food colouring and Flavouring and mix.

6) Pour gelatin/syrup into bottle and carefully fill molds.

7) Place in refrigerator and let firm up- I left them in overnight

They look like gummy bears, they kind of smell like gummy bears but they don’t quite taste like gummy bears. They taste like a sweet cocktail or wine cooler. This is a sophisticated treat that’s pretty straight forward to make and I think it’s a perfect party favour for a NYE shindig!

My DIY gingerbread house

So Blogmas has come to an end. It has been 24 straight days of posting  (25 if you include today)

I have never participated in Blogmas before (I never even knew it was a thing before this year!) and it has certainly been an experience… hundreds of photos, hours of editing and typing, nights thinking and planning.

I also learnt quite a few things. For example I have gotten fairly decent at photographing food and makeup items, (I’m  addicted to flat lays), but I learnt that being photographed for makeup and hair and outfit looks is a whole other ball game.

I also explored other types of posts such as short story and poetry writing.

All in all this was a great experience for me to grow as a blogger and I look forward to Blogmas 2017!

Blogmas Bonus – Cranberry Scones

Hello and Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it and Happy Holidays to everyone.

Back in November when I was meticulously planning each and every Blogmas post, I asked my sister to do a guest post on something sweet and easy to make. I told her what daybI was thinking of putting it up and told her to get back to me.

Well she did. Yesterday. But I digress. Better late than never.

This recipe is taken from our favourite online baker Stephanie fron Joy of Baking (I have referenced her more than a few times)

Since this is Kristine’s post I will present it the way she did.

Ingredients

2 cups of flour
1/3 cup of white sugar
2 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup of unsalted butter
2/3 cup of fresh cranberries
2/3 cup of milk

She left out the candied fruit and the almonds listed in the original recipe.

Instructions

Preheat oven to 400F (200C) and butter or line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Whisk dry ingredients then cut butter in. Use a pastey blender of you have one if not use forks or knives creating course crumbs.

Add the cranberries and gently mix

Add milk and stir careful not to overmix

On a floured surface knead dough four times then form a circle about 7 inches (18 cm) in diameter.

Cut it into 8 triangles and brush top with milk.

Bake for 20 minutes or until crust is brown.

My sister gave these to some of her cowokers for Christmas. They make great gifts or a light dessert to have with coffee after all the heavy Christmas dinner.

Cozy Christmas  Breakfast

BLOG-Mas DAY 24!

I feel like breakfast at Christmas time should be a little special and these two recipes are bound to be. The first recipe is Cinnamon pancakes with Blackberry syrup and paired with a spicy hot cocoa. 

WHAT YOU NEED 

Pancakes 

1) 1 1/3 cups (135g)Pancake mix 

2) 1 tbsp cinnamon

3) 1 cup Blackberries  Any type of berries will do. I chose blackberries because they were the cheapest st the supermarket. 

4) 1/2 cup (48g)  White sugar 


Ingredients 


WHAT TO DO 

Pancakes 

1) Add cinnamon to pancake mix and stir in. 

Add cinnamon 

Mix in cinnamon 

2) Add water and mix well. 

Batter

3) Heat skillet and make pancakes to desired size. 

Cook pancakes

Syrup

4) Place blackberries, sugar and teabag into a skillet or saucepan.

5) Add  water and bring to a boil.

Boil





6) Adjust to a simmer until syrupy in consistency

7) Pour over pancakes.

Spicy hot cocoa 

WHAT YOU NEED 

(Makes one 16 oz(475mL) cup )


1) 1/4 cup(56g) Chocolate morsels /chips

2) Cocoa powder  (unsweetened )

3) 1 tbsp of White sugar 

4) pinch of Salt

5)2 cups (16floz )of milk

6) 1/4 tsp Cayenne pepper 


Cocoa ingredients 


WHAT TO DO 

1) Place all the dry ingredients including the chocolate morsels into a saucepan and mix until chocolate has melted.

2) Add milk and let simmer

3) Pour into cup and top with marshmallows and pepper

Your breakfast is ready to serve!

This is a delicious cute breakfast.  The cinnamon adds a festive feel to the pancakes and the fruit based syrup gives it a more complex grown up flavour.

The hot cocoa is rich and decedent and the pepper adds a most unexpected  dimension. It gives a slow smokey burn that somehow goes beautifully with the chocolate  (because what doesn’t go beautifully with chocolate? )
